Skiing on the Marketplace - Torihiihtoa

I wonder what other town gives you the opportunity to ski in the middle of the town's center on marketplace? This was the case on last Thursday. It was very cold and a chilly wind was biting our cheeks. Many happy families had gathered on the market place despite the weather. There was excitement in the air, the children were having a skiing competition. It was amazing how fast some children were able to ski around the market place! People were in good mood and I bet that the children didn't even notice the coldness because they were so full of enthusiasm! What a great event!

Mahdetaankohan missään muualla hiihtää keskellä kaupunkia pitkin toria? Viime torstaina oli tällaisen hulvattoman tapahtuman vuoro Raumalla. Pakkanen ja tuuli purivat poskia kipeästi, mutta silti torille oli kokoontunut runsaasti väkeä katsomaan lasten hiihtokilpailua. Oli uskomatonta, miten nopeasti jotkut lapset kiersivät toria! Ihmiset olivat hyvällä tuulella. Uskon, ettei monikaan lapsi innostukseltaan edes huomannut kylmyyttä! Mahtava tapahtuma!

Winter in My Neighbourhood - Otan alueen talvea

I am mesmerized about this fairytale winter. The whole town looks beautiful, mysterious and new. Me and my camera had a small walk in my neighbourhood. I really wish I had a decent camera so that I could capture all the beautiness around me.

Tämä taikatalvi on lumonnut minut. Kuljin kotikulmillani kamerani kanssa ja otin valokuvia. Kaupunki tuntui salaperäiseltä ja uudelta. Lumi vaimensi äänet. Oli oudon hiljaista. Miten toivonkaan, että minulla olisi kunnollinen kamera, jotta voisin näyttää tämän kaiken kauneuden ympärilläni!

Snow Art in Old Rauma - Lumitaidetta Vanhassa Raumassa

Someone has made a wonderful snow sculpture in old Rauma. Thank you who ever you are! My family really enjoys it. I see a woman in this piece of art. For me this is a winter fairy or a queen of snow. She walked over the grounds and covered it with the snow she had in her hems. My husband saw parts of a ship on this sculpture and my daughter thought it is a gate or a part of a crown. She also thought that it could be a tower from a castle.****

Vanhan Rauman laidalle oli ilmestynyt kaunis lumiveistos. Kävimme iltakävelyllä koko perheen voimin ihailemassa veistosta. Kiitos tekijälle! Minä näen veistoksessa naisen. Se on ehkä talvikeiju tai lumikuningatar. Hän kulki yli maan lunta helmoisssaan ja muutti maan valkoiseksi. Mieheni näki veistoksessa osia laivasta, keulan esimerkiksi. Tyttärestäni veistos voisi olla portti tai kruunun osa. Hän mietti myös, että veistos voisi olla linnan torni.

Tonttujen yö, Vanha Rauma - Night of the Elfs, Old Rauma

On December is the Night of the Elfs in old Rauma. It is an idyllic happening organized by the shopkeepers of old Rauma. The small shops stay open until 9 p.m. You can here music and singing in the streets and enjoy the warming effect of mullwine. People are in good mood and everybody is wishing a lovely christmas to friends and acquaintances.

Joulukuussa on vanhassa Raumassa citykauppiaiden järjestämä tapahtuma nimeltään Tonttujen yö. Tonttujen yönä vanhan Rauman putiikit ovat auki aina kello 21:een saakka. Musiikki ja laulu ympäröivät hyväntuuliset ihmiset. Kaikkialta kuulee lämpimiä joulutoivotuksia, kun ihmiset puhuvat ystäviensä ja tuttujensa kanssa. Jutustelun lomassa juotu glögi lämmittää mukavasti.

You can meet Father Christmas on the Night of the Elfs. He is in his office and many children visit him and some children give letters to him. Father Christmas gave gingerbreads to the children.

Joulupukilla on konttori vanhassa Raumassa ja siellä lapset voivat käydä tapaamassa häntä. Jotkut lapset vievät pukille kirjeitä. Pukki tarjoili piparkakkuja lapsille.

There are many christmastrees in Rauma this time of year. One of my favourites is this tree where people can hang decorations they have made themselves. The night ends with a beautiful firework and then people gather around this christmastree to see it.

Tähän aikaan vuodesta Raumalla on monia joulukuusia. Yksi suosikeistani on kuusi, johon ihmiset saavat ripustaa itsetekemänsä joulukoristeen. Ilta loppuu komeaan ilotulitukseen ja silloin ihmiset ovat kerääntyneet tämän kuusen lähelle katselemaan ilotulitusta.

A Lunch at the Heart of Old Rauma - Wähä-Tallbo, lounas Vanhassa Raumassa

There are a few restaurants and cafés in old Rauma that serve lunch. A place called Wähä-Tallbo is one of my favourites. The restaurant is in an old wooden house and it is decorated in old fashion way. I was very lucky when I took these pictures. The bigger diningroom was almost empty so it was easy to film. After I had taken the photos a huge amount of hungry people came in.

This restaurant is very popular among the local people. The prices are affordable and the service is extremely friendly and quick. If you have lunch here it includes a salad buffet,bread, main course and coffee and bisquit. The food is uncomplicated and tasty. On Friday they serve the local speciality, lapskoussi. During the week this restaurant is opened from 10.30 a.m. until 7.00 p.m.

Vanhassa Raumassa sijaitsee muutamia lounaspaikkoja. Yksi suosikeistani on Wähä-Tallbo. Ravintola on vanhassa puutalossa ja se on sisustettu 1900-luvun alun tyyliin. Ravintola on suosittu varsinkin paikallisväestön keskuudessa. Minulla oli tuuria ottaessani valokuvia, ravintolan suurempi sali oli melkein tyhjä. Otettuani kuvat paikka täyttyi nälkäisistä ruokailijoista. Ravintolan hintataso on kohtuullinen. Lounaaseen sisältyvät pääruuan lisäksi salaattipöytä, leipä, vesi, kahvi ja pikkuleipä. Palvelu on huomattavan ystävällistä ja nopeaa. Ruoka on selkeää ja maistuvaa. Perjantaisin ravintolasta saa paikallista erikoisuutta, lapskoussia. Viikolla ravintola on auki klo:10.30-19.00.

Autumn in My Neighbourhood

...I have to admit that these pictures are old. I took them last year on a sunny autumn day. I wanted to take some autumn pictures this year, too but everytime I plan to go out it starts to rain. Now it doesn't rain, but I have got a terrible flue, so I can't go out. I don't live in Old Rauma, but there are some rather old and beautiful houses in my neighbourhood. I like this part of town especially on autumn.

Olisin halunnut ottaa kuvia naapurustoni syksystä, mutta aina kun ajattelen laittaa nenäni ulos ovesta alkaa sataa. Nyt ei sada, mutta olen niin järkyttävässä flunssassa ettei tulisi mieleenikään mennä ulos. Minulla onneksi tasan vuosi sitten otettuja kuvia jemmassa. En asu Vanhassa Raumassa, mutta lähiympäristöstäni löytyy silti melko vanhoja ja kauniita taloja. Tämä kaupunginosa on mielestäni erityisen kaunis syksyllä. Täällä on paljon puita ja pensaita ja syksy saa ne hehkumaan.
This house is surely playing hide and seek. I bet it has the best camouflage in the town :)

Männistö, Rauma

Almost next to my home is a beautiful and nostalgic residential area called Männistö. It was built in the end of 1900 century and in the beginning of 2000 century. The big wooden houses are built in form of a rectangle and there is a nice yard inside the rectangle. It is amazing how large the yard is. You can not really perceive the size of the yard from the street.Kotikulmillani on Männistön kaunis ja nostalginen asuntoalue. Männistö rakennettiin 1800- ja 1900-lukujen vaihteessa. Se oli Rauman ensimmäinen työväen asunto-osakeyhtiö. Talot on rakennettu suorakulmion muotoon, niin että niiden keskelle jää suuri piha-alue. Piha-alue on yllättävän suuri, kadulta sitä on vaikea hahmottaa.

Last weekend the people of Männistö had a yardsale. It was nice to walk there and I even bought a few things. In Männistö you feel a strong sense of community. It is something you nowadays rarely feel. In Finland the neighbours don't necessarily know eachother or say "Hello!" when they see their neighbour. That is sad. In Männistö I got the feeling that everyone were ready to help their neighbour, but also give them their space. It was the 4th annual yardsale this year. It is nice tradition to have this type of event with your neighbours and same time get rid of the old stuff you don't need anymore. As a child I lived in a small village where you coul always count on your neighbour if you needed help. Männistö reminded me of my childhood.
Viime viikonloppuna Männistössä oli pihamarkkinat. Perinne on jatkunut jo neljä vuotta. Viihdyin markkinoilla kauan. Tein löytöjä ja juttelin ihmisten kanssa. Männistössä on omituinen ja ihana yhteisöllisyyden tunne, johon harvoin enää törmää. Ihmiset olivat valmiita antamaan apua naapurilleen, mutta myös antamaan tilaa muille. olen asunut lapsuuteni pienessä kylässä, jossa naapuriapuun voi aina luottaa. Jotain samaa tunsin täällä. Markkinat ovat hyvä tapa puuhata jotain yhteistä naapureiden kanssa ja samalla myydä omat tarpeettomat tavaransa.
I could easily live here.
Voisin hyvin asua täällä.

Rauma Adult Education Centre - Rauman kansalaisopisto

Every autumn the good people of Rauma and Rauma area get an interesting brochure. It comes from the Rauma Adult Education Centre. It is amazing how many courses this adult education centre can provide. The courses are very affordable and as senior citizen or unemployed you will get reduction from the course fee.

I always read the brochure very carefully with a nice cup of coffee. I even read this years brochure -although I know that I propably won't be able to take any courses. Maybe I will participate on some of the interesting lectures the provide, though.

I have studied for example Sign language, Spanish, arts and crafts and joga in folk high school. I have also posed as a model for a paintingclass (and no, I was not naked if that is what you are thinking about :)). This year there were many interesting things to learn including many different languages, also Finnish for foreigners, many sports, theatre, arts and crafts of different kind, technology classes, food making courses and a lot more. If I would have time I would study how to make jewerly, how to write creatively and how to dance solo latino. The variety is endless and to me it is no wonder that Rauma Adult Education Centre is rewarded with a qualityreward given by Ministry of Education.

In the brochure there are also some Rauma's specialities for example how to make lace or how to be a skipper in the archipelago.

Joka vuosi postiluukusta tupsahtaa Rauman kansalaisopiston esite. Tutkin sen aina tarkkaan samalla, kun juon ison kupin kahvia. Tänä vuonnakin luin esitteen huolellisesti, vaikka pelkään etten toistaiseksi ehdi ottaa itselleni uutta harrastusta. Ehkä osallistun kuitenkin jollekin mielenkiintoiselle luennolle. On hämmästyttävää, miten laajaa opiston tarjonta on! Kurssit on onnistuttu pitämään kohtuullisen hintaisina ja eläkeläisten ja työttömien on mahdollista saada avustusta kurssimaksuihin (eläkeläisten atk-kursseihin ja työttömien kaikkiin kursseihin).

Vuosien varrella olen opiskellut kansalaisopistossa viittomakieltä ja espanjaa. Olen ollut myös askartelukurssilla. Nuorempana olin maalausmallina maalauskurssilla -ja ei, en ollut alasti :) . Opiston tarjonta on laajaa: kieliä, liikuntaa, teatteria, käsitöitä, askartelua, puutöitä, tietotekniikkaa, ruokakursseja ja paljon muuta! Jos minulla olisi aikaa, haluaisin oppia tekemään koruja, kirjoittaa luovasti ja perehtyä soololatinotanssin saloihin. Valikoima on loputon! Minulle ei ole yllätys, että Rauman kansalaisopisto on palkittu opetusministeriön laatupalkinnolla.

Rauman kansalaisopistolla on myös muutama paikallinen erikoisuus, esimerkiksi pitsinnypläyskurssi ja saaristolaivurikurssi.

Next to the Market place is a wonderful café, Café Sali. This is a newcomer in my town and something what this town really needed, since this is the only coffee shop which is opened late in the evening, too. The service in this café is uncomplicated and friendly.

If you are looking for something old and nostalgic, this is propably not the place for you. If you want to enjoy coffee, pastry, salads or for example some sparkling wine in a hip, trendy, fresh and modern atmosphere this is THE place for you.

The café is relatively big and it has different type of sitting areas to choose from.

This is a nice place to relax with your friends or by yourself. As a mom I find it luxurios to come here and be accompanied just by a good book, a good cup of coffee and the coffee shops small buzzing around me.

Täällä on mukavaa rentoutua ystävien kanssa tai ihan yksin. Minulle äitinä on ylellistä tulla tänne aivan yksin, lukea hyvää kirjaa, juoda kahvia ja nauttia hetkestä yksin kahvilan ystävällisessä hyörinässä.

The Night of Black lace - Mustanpitsin yö

In the end of July we have a theme week called the Lace week. On Lace week we have dozens of exhibitions and other activities. On Friday the town celebrates a festival Mustanpitsin yö - Night of black lace. Then the shops in the city center are opened longer and there is a big market fare. The whole town is full of people in good mood. This year it was raining cats and dogs, but there were still amazingly many people celebrating.

Heinäkuun lopussa on Raumalla teemaviikko nimeltään Pitsiviikko. Pitsiviikolla on tusinoittain näyttelyjä ja paljon muitakin tapahtumia. Pitsiviikon perjantaina juhlitaan Mustanpitsin yönä. Tänä vuonna Mustanpitsin yötä vietettiin huonossa säässä, mutta ihmisiä oli silti yllättävän paljon liikkeellä. Tunnelma oli iloinen. Mustanpitsin yönä keskustan liikkeet ovat auki myöhään ja paikalla on myös paljon myyntikojuja.People were dancing and it looked super fun to see the bouncing umbrellas on the "dance floor".

Urheimmat ihmiset tanssivat huonosta säästä huolimatta. Tanssivat sateenvarjot näyttivät lystikkäiltä.
It is a tradition to have some black lace on the Night of black lace. This family had really made an effort! Great!

Mustanpitsin yönä asussa kuuluu -tottakai- olla mustaa pitsiä. Tämä perhe oli todella panostanut asuihinsa. Mahtavaa!

On Friday the whole town is full of music. Beside the musicians of Rauma we also have some of the most famous artists of Finland performing here. The iceing on the cake is that the concerts are for free! For the people in Rauma this event is a must and for the other people this is a festival that you should see!

Perjantaina kaupunki tulvi musiikkia. Rauman oman musiikkiväen lisäksi tapahtumassa esiintyy aina Suomen eturivin artisteja. Huippuhienoa on se, että konsertteihin pääsee ilmaiseksi. Suurimmalle osalle raumalaisista tämä juhla on tapahtuma, jota ei voi ohittaa. Rauman ulkopuolelta tuleville tämä on tapahtuma, joka pitää tulla kokemaan paikan päälle.

Courtyards - Sisäpihoja

At the end of July Rauma celebrates a week called the Lace week. Then the inhabitants of Old Rauma participate, too. They open their normally closed courtyards to the public and hold fleamarkets. There are tens of yards to see. Here are some pictures of a few of them.
Heinäkuun lopussa Raumalla juhlitaan pitsiviikkoa. Vanhan Rauman asukkaat pitävät pitsiviikolla pihakirpputoreja ja paljastavat yleensä yleisöltä suljetut yllättävän suuret sisäpihansa. Kohteita on kymmeniä. Tässä kuvia parista sisäpihasta.

Lace is something traditional in Rauma. There are still several lacemakers here. In earlier ages the people in Rauma got income from the sea and the lace. The men were sailing on the seas and the women made lace with an old technic (not by crocheting.)

Pitsi kuuluu perinteisesti Raumaan. Entisaikoina raumalaiset saivat tulonsa merestä ja pitsistä. Miehet purjehtivat merillä ja naiset nypläsivät pitsiä.
We even have an orthodox praying room in Old Rauma.

Vanhasta Raumasta löytyy myös ortodoksinen rukoushuone.

In the Atelier and Garden of an Artist - Taiteilijan ateljeessa ja puutarhassa

Famous Finnish artist Kerttu Horila lives and works in Old Rauma. In summertime the door to her atelier is temptingly open. In the atelier you can see her art. I find her art interesting and human. Some of the work really stops you and makes you think. Her works often have a nice twist of humour in them and that is something that fascinates me.

Kuuluisa suomalainen taiteilija Kerttu Horila asuu ja työskentelee Vanhassa Raumassa. Kesäaikaan ovi hänen työhuoneelleen on kutsuvasti auki. Kun ovesta astuu sisään näkee hienoja taideteoksia. Minusta työt ovat kiinnostavia ja hyvin inhimillisiä. Välillä joku veistoksista pysäyttää katsomaan ja ajattelemaan. Horilan töissä on usein elämäniloista huumoria ja minua sellainen viehättää valtavasti.The artist herself sculpted and painted on a canvas and in the canvas again. When the atelier is opened, you can find Kerttu Horila there. I find it very nice. It is always interesting to meet the actual artist who has made the pieces of art.

Kuvassa on taitelija itse sekä veistettynä että maalauksena maalauksessa. Olen huomannut, että työhuoneen ollessa auki myös taiteilija on paikalla. Se on hienoa, koska on mielenkiintoista tavata ihminen, joka on tehnyt taideteokset.
In the atelier you can hear and see Tango!

Ateljeessa käydessäni korviini kantautui tangomusiikkia. Joitain pariskuntia oli kerääntynyt tanssimaan sitä seinälle.

In the courtyard opens a different reality. The view that you have in front of your eyes is almost surreal. The garden is full of beautiful flowers and there are sculpted figures, too. Please, click on the picture to view it on full size.

The Library - Kirjasto

The Peer is the name of the library in Rauma. The library is next to the teatre and it is built along the Rauma river. The building is relatively new and it was opened to the public in 2004. In my point of view the situation of the library beeing in the center of Rauma is good. The building is very well planned and it fits to its surroundings.

Rauman vuonna 2004 valmistunut kirjastorakennus on nimeltään Laituri. Kirjasto on keskustassa, teatterin vieressä. Se on rakennettu Rauman Ganalin rannalle. Mielestäni kirjasto on harmoninen ja sopii hyvin ympäristöönsä. Rakennus ei ole hyökkäävä, vaan melkeinpä hieman huomaamaton, mutta minusta tämä seikka on mielenkiintoinen ja positiivinen.
On the second floor there is a cozy reading area under a window at the roof. Natural light and the comfortable chairs are a good combination for a relaxing reading experience.

Yläkerran keskellä oleva lukualue on viihtyisä. Katossa oleva ikkuna antaa luonnonvaloa. Mukavat tuolit ja hyvä valo tekevät lukuhetkestä rentouttavan.
There are about thirty pieces of art in the library of Rauma. The artworks are mainly made by artists of Rauma. I guess that the people sometimes don't notice how beautifully decorated the library is. I always find something new to watch when I visit the library.

Rauman kirjastossa on noin kolmekymmentä pääosin raumalaisten taitelijoiden tekemää taideteosta. Minusta tuntuu, etteivät ihmiset (ja varsinkaan raumalaiset) aina huomaa, miten kauniisti kirjasto on sisustettu. Löydän jokaiselle kirjastoreissullani jotain uutta katseltavaa.
In the library there is a nice, big and peaceful room where you can read magazines for free. This is also great for the tourists since you can borrow magazines and newspapers in many languages. My favourite place to read is next to the window. From the window you can see Rauma river and the people passing by.

Kirjastossa on suuri lehtienlukusali, jossa on todella monipuolinen valikoima kotimaisia ja ulkomaisia lehtiä. Lempipaikkani lehtienlukusalissa on ikkunan vieressä. Ikkunasta voi katsella Rauman Ganalia ja ohikulkevia ihmisiä.
When you enter the library there are some showcases on the right. This time there was an exhibition of Tilda-dolls. The exhibitions keep changing so it is always interesting to see what comes next. This is a good opportunity of the art- and craftmakers in Rauma area to present their works.

Kirjaston sisääntuloaulassa on oikealla puolella lasivitriinejä. Tällä kertaa vitriineissä esiteltiin Tilda-nukkeja. Näyttelyt vaihtuvat melko usein, joten on aina mielenkiintoista nähdä, mitä seuraavaksi on esillä. Tämä näyttelyalue on hyvä mahdollisuus raumalaisille kädentaitajille ja taiteilijoille esitellä tuotantoaan.

Summer Living Room -Kesäolohuone

Rauma's own Central Park is a nice place to hang out. There is a coffee shop where you can buy for example lunches. The park is not very big, but there is a lot to do for the children. It is my favourite living room during the summer and a good place to meet friends.

Keskuspuisto on nimensä mukaan Rauman keskustassa sijaitseva puisto, jonka laidalla on kahvila. Kahvilasta voi ostaa muun muassa lounasta. Puisto ei ole kovin suuri, mutta siellä on lapsille kivaa tekemistä. Keskuspuisto on minun kesäolohuoneeni ja se on hyvä paikka ystävien ja tuttavien tapaamiseen.

The Market Place - Rauman tori

In Old Rauma there is a lovely market place. You can buy near by produced fresh vegetables, fish, bread, flowers etc. from the market.

Pystökaffe on raumalainen perinne. Kahvi ostetaan torin laidalla olevasta kioskista ja se kuuluu juoda seisaaltaan samalla, kun jutellaan muiden kahvittelijoiden kanssa. Torilla kokoontuu myös "Toriparlamentti", joka koostuu pääosin hieman vanhemmista miehistä, jotka keskustelevat kaupungin politiikasta, urheiluasioista tai muista päivänpolttavista aiheista.It is nice to do bisnes and to talk with the sales people at the market place. You normally get to taste the strawberries or the peas before buying them. Sometimes you get something extra after buying things. In the picture my daughter has got an extra carrot and some peas for free. The prices are not necessarily cheaper from the supermarket, but everything is fresh and from my point of view very tasty.

Torimyyjien kanssa on mukava jutella ja tehdä kauppaa. Torilla saa myös yleensä maistiaisia ennen varsinaista kaupantekoa. Kuvassa tyttäreni on saanut ylimääräisen maisteluporkkanan ja herneitä. Hinnoittelu ei torilla ole välttämättä edullisempaa kuin supermarketeissa, mutta kaikki on hyvin tuoretta ja minusta erinomaisen makuista.

See you at the market place! During the summer it is even opened at the evenings on Tuesday and Thursday . Otherwise it is open daily from the early morning until about two o'clock p.m.

Nähdään torilla! Kesäisin on myös iltatori auki tiistaisin ja torstaisin. Muuten tori on avoinna aikaisesta aamusta noin kahteen asti iltapäivällä.
